Hormone disrupters have been found in children's mattresses per two recent studies conducted at the University of Toronote and published in Ecotoxicology and Public Health. The first study measured the amount of chemicals in the bedrooms of children between 6 months and 4 years of age. More than two dozen potentially dangerous chemicals, primarily related to retarding fires and to increase the durability and flexibility of plastics, were found in the air in the children's basements. The highest concentrations of hormone disrupters were found near the beds of the children
In a similar study, 16 newly purchased children's mattresses were tested and had the same worrisome chemicals discovered in the first study mentioned above. Simulating the effect of a child's boy weight and temperature on the mattress resulted in chemcial emissions increasing substantially. These mattresses were purchased in Canada but the same are available in the United States.
Given the larger amount of time children tend to sleep compared to adults, this study has caused a lot of worry from parents regarding their children's health.
When purchasing a mattress for your child, the safest thing to do is to buy the most natural product available. Unfortunately, that is rarely the least expensive option in the market.
